The Republican tax bill is about placating the wealthy, not helping Americans

Congressional Republicans’ collective sigh of relief after passing tax legislation may seem confusing. Won’t voters hold them accountable in 2018 for passing such an historically unpopular bill? The answer is “no,” for several reasons.

Solution

The tax bill under consideration in the US Congress is a Christmas gift to the top tiers of taxpayers, despite claims to the contrary by POTUS and Republican leaders in the House and Senate. The only way to end this charade is by implementing truer democracy and the rule of law, with strict separation of powers and checks and balances. The heads of the major government branches should be directly elected, and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year to inject the people as a third force in government.
