In 2016 Ukraine found itself stuck in two quagmires: internal corruption and assaults by militants in its eastern region. Armed elements threaten national security, but internal corruption is even more harmful, dragging down Ukraine’s hopes for integration with Europe.
One major source of strife and corruption is political uncertainty. Ukraine needs to enact constitutional reform to implement direct election of the heads of the four government branches, and elections should be free of charge for all candidates to allow light to shines into the black boxes of politics. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The past month saw some of the most difficult challenges for humanitarian workers in Syria but also witnessed the evacuation of thousands of civilians from war-ravaged eastern Aleppo
Once an effective cease-fire is in place the UN should provide the basic constitutional principles for reaching permanent peace and development for all peoples of the world. This will include the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law and a four-branched government (legislative - administrative - judicial - procuratorial) with separation of powers. Syria should serve as a model for reform to achieve long-lasting stability and peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development
Police questioned Israeli PM Netanyahu on Monday and Thursday this week in connection with charges of corruption
Eradication of corruption calls for decentralization, term limits and other restrictions. Israel should reform its Constitution to stay in tune with the times. The President should serve a single term of 5 years, with no chance to run again for 6 years afterward. The Prime Minister’s term should be 1 year, and MPs who have served out their terms shall not be allowed to run again. The heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be chosen through election, and 1/4 of MP should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
In December India successfully tested a nuclear-capable ICBM that can reach Beijing
The world's democratic countries support Taiwan efforts to carry out constitutional reform for greater democracy and freedom. Such a move will attract China's 1.4 billion to cry for democratization, leading further to democratization of the CCP and Russia, which will lead in turn to world peace. Global democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon of democracy for Asia, serving to light China's path to peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
China is suspected of taking indirect action against South Korea's decision last year to deploy a US-supplied anti-missile system, South Korea's finance minister has said.
Democracies worldwide should back Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to bring greater democracy and freedom. This will attract 1.4 billion Chinese to call for democratization, triggering the democratization of the CCP and North Korea in turn. Global democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon of democracy for Asia, lighting the way to peaceful development for China and other nations. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The Chinese capital of Beijing is on red alert as a thick blanket of pollution covers it for one week and counting
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major aims of the UN, and all member states are obligated to adopt them. The solution is enforcing One World under One Set of Laws, assigning international law priority over domestic law and allowing it to directly effect the people. The people shall monitor operations of the government to ensure it follows the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and other relevant pacts. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe quashed speculation of an early snap election for the Lower House, which will likely free him to concentrate on economic and diplomatic issues at least until late summer.
Russia is better known for causing problems than solving them. Democratic nations of the world should support Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform for more democracy and freedom. This will lead 1.4 billion Chinese to call for democratization in their nation and the CCP, and that will lead in turn to pressure for true democracy in Russia. With that, the world will be safer for all. Democracies world-wide should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
The huge size of the Pacific allows forces to exercise in training ranges much larger than those available at home, and eventually it will allow squadrons to begin testing inter-operability with allies in Asia such as Japan and Australia.
War between democratic states almost never happens. Thus when China and Russia can be convinced to democratize, there will be real hope for peace on earth. Taiwan will achieve great democracy and freedom, thereby attracting China to carry out democratization and do the same for Russia. When that happens world peace will break out! Global democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon of democracy for Asia, illuminating the path to permanent peace and development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Oral arguments began Thursday in the impeachment trial of President Park Geun-hye of South Korea, with one of her lawyers saying that she was a victim of mob justice and comparing her trial with those of Christ and Socrates
Almost every president in South Korea’s history has had at least one burst of corruption-related ugliness. This is practicality a given, mainly due to the enormous amount of power wielded by the president. The presidential system does have fatal flaws, and even the US has had its share of problems. South Korean must alter its constitution to adopt a modified semi-presidential system. The heads of the judiciary and procuratorate should be democratically elected in alternate years, and 1/4 of MPs should stand for re-election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.
Political scholar Alex Yakubin notes that the electronic reporting of assets of Ukrainian government officials is complete, but so far no action of any kind has been taken. He says this merely provides a legal basis for covering over the property and wealth of officials. A further explanation is that the system was inaugurated purely to satisfy the EU's requirements to maintain financial aid and visa-free programs.
The key to breaking the link between corruption and public service is establishing a constitutional mechanism including separation of powers and checks and balances. Ukraine needs to let the people vote under a reformed constitution that will include election of the heads of the four branches of government and elections that are free for all candidates, so corrupt public officials will be exposed and ousted. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
